Leah Bird and her husband, Ed Wright, have just moved from their comfortable two-bedroom apartment and jobs in Beverly Hills, California to a trailer on a five-acre Oregon farm. This can be a dramatic life changing experience for anyone, but is something that is becoming quite ordinary in today's troubled economy. Jobs are being lost and thousands of people are being forced to relocate.
This change came when Mr Wright lost his job managing life insurance portfolios for millionaires at a private firm in Beverly Hills. The niche company he worked for relied heavily on capital flow, felt the pain of the credit crunch and had to terminate Mr Wright's contract that was worth $100,000 per year.
The couple who were used to eating at expensive restaurants, extravagant shopping, luxurious living now came to realise that they would not be able to maintain their lifestyle. Mr Wright's parents offered to let the couple live on their farm in southern Oregon until the couple could stand on their own two feet and get back to their own independence.
Mr Ed Wright said, "I've been in Los Angeles for a long time and I've had to start over before, you spend two or three years getting back on your feet and then what? It's a struggle if you aren't making a lot of money."
The couple accepted the offer straight away and Mr Ed Wright says "It's not necessarily a lifestyle that has ever seemed attractive to me, I always saw myself as more of a metropolitan person, but you know, without money, this was our best option."
The couple moved to Oregon in January 2009, after a two-day drive from Los Angeles. They are hopeful that the farm will give them the needed break from the city life and rat race and hopefully a chance to find new careers.
In Los Angeles, the area they lived in had a population of about 20,000, however the closest town to their farm has a far less population.
Mr Ed Wright said, "We're not going to lie to you and say everything is hunky dory, It's hard being out here. I feel like a fish out of water. I'm so out of my element."
The happy couple are now getting familiar with their surroundings, and say that they now have more time for themselves to truly enjoy their lives and cherise every single ticking moment of time.
