Muslim prayer beads, also called misbaha or tasbeeh, can be made of various materials including precious gemstones, exotic hardwoods, ivory, horn and bone. UNS often uses exotic wood for its earthy, warm feel and to imbue the senses with the smooth, subtle scents of nature. Traditionally, Islamic prayer beads are used in the morning or evening while reciting one’s dhikr, or litanies, or after the Islamic prayer. The misbaha tracks set numbers of tasbeeh, to free the mind for worship. Muslim prayer beads are generally made in sets of thirty-three or ninety-nine beads.
Muslims artists traditionally applied geometric patterns, calligraphy and floral motifs to various metals to make Islamic jewellery, reflecting what they saw in themselves, the world and Islam. The Islamic Jewellery offered by UNS is an example of working silver to this purpose using a combination of floral motifs and Arabic calligraphy in the Kuf, Thuluth and Diwani scripts.
