There are many talking right now that say that Facebook is the new Google and Google is the new Microsoft. While we are talking about three very different companies the association makes sense, in a way.
Facebook is literally growing like a weed and has become a household name for anything social networking related and on the other hand Google is the word most of us use when talking about searching for something on the internet. It's true most of us now say "I have to Google that" instead of saying "I have to search for that".
Facebook is the young company much like Google was 8 years ago and like Google it is experiencing incredible growth. Facebook is at almost 200 Million active users and is growing around 750K to 1 million users a day. The numbers are completely staggering, another statistic to blow your mind, if Facebook were a country it's 200 million members would make it the 5 largest country in the world. So in theory Facebook is the new internet darling and in the end is capturing a massive amount of data. Facebook knows our likes, dislikes and a lot of what we all do on a regular basis.
Now onto Google, well they since day one have had a large amount of our personal data and because of the amount of search that is performed with Google they to also have a detailed account of the things we do online. It is said that Google can now predict outbreaks of the flu and in what areas of the world because of the increase in search queries relating to colds and flu's. So how is Google becoming more like Microsoft? This has everything to do with the other business's that they are involved in.
Google's main focus will always be its search engine. It's what made them famous and wealthy and will continue to do so. Google is however growing by leaps and bounds past search and it's obvious they are trying to dominate not only the internet but anything related to search and computing. Google has developed operating systems, browsers, email, mapping systems, document and file storage, and the list goes on and on. At any given time Google has some 1,000 plus new projects and applications being developed and most of these new ideas have come from within their organization.
So will Facebook become the new Google and Google become the new Microsoft. The answer is no, they both however have an amazing opportunity to become similarly powerful players in the internet and technology world. All I know is that both of these powerhouse companies are there to stay and will continue to be a big part of our lives in the future.
