A famous actress once said this (and we paraphrase): Women over 40 years have to choose between their butt and their face.
Famous words. And very true.
When one gets older, weight gets redistributed. The buttocks and the abdomen have a great tendency to store more fat. So do the cheeks, but to a lesser extent. So what do you do to reduce the fat in the butt?. Exercise and diet are supposed to do it. And they do, except that the fat loss is often in the wrong places. If you lose weight enough for the butt to decrease in size, the face looks thin and the cheeks hollow, and you look old. If you keep on weight enough for the cheeks to look plump (which makes you look younger), the butt stays big.
The traditional way to correct this problem of combined gaunt face and nice butt was to do surgical face lifts, in which situation the skin of the face was pulled backwards over the ear and temple and excess cut off and stitched. This resulted in the disappearance of wrinkles on the lower face and a smoothening of the skin.
A less extreme way was to have a thread lift, where a barbed thread was introduced into the temple and pushed under the skin, over the cheek bone and back in a loop again to the temple. The thread was then tightened with the resultant skin pulled back up against gravity.
Both ways had a tendency to cause the face to look flatter and the cheek bones look more prominent, sometimes enhancing the gaunt look rather than reducing it, because the underlying subcutaneous tissue and fat were just not there to fill things out.
Enter the facial filler. Facial fillers, commonly composed of a naturally-occurring substance in the body called hyaluronic acid, are nowadays used to fill up the space left behind by loss of fat and subcutaneous tissue, restoring the cheeks to their former glory. The procedure is called the cheek lift or cheek augmentation.
Some of these fillers have been modified chemically to last longer in the body (up to 1 year), as without this modification, they will only stay a few days. Examples of these fillers are Juvaderm and Restylane.
In the hands of an expert esthetic doctor, a gaunt, hollow-cheeked old-looking face is transformed into a youthful plump-cheeked face that complements the exercise-induced and diet-induced slim body and downsized butt. These fillers such as Juvaderm last between 9 months to a year after injection, so that there is that length of time for the face to continue looking young till the next cheek augmentation or cheek lift.
