Finding Student Jobs That Enhance Your Employability Prospects

Having been a student many years ago, I for one know the troublesome time of organising my finances whilst finding time to study for my mounting work. Even though most of us were fortunate enough to have gone to university when the Labour government had just taken power and effectively introduced the new student loans scheme, for some reason this was still not enough to fund our books, travel tickets, beer consumption or even just basic living allowance.

Most students would embark upon finding student jobs that may have entailed bar work, retail customer service or work within a telephone call centre. Others would work part-time in a nearby convenient shop or gain work at the University campus, either as a representative of the university of at the Student Union bar. These reflect what typical student jobs are available; however, it is a fact that a lot of these jobs are never related to what the individual would want to do in the future.

One of the most important fundamental things about being a student is to work hard, complete your studies and ensure that you have a good grounding to secure a stable career in the future. The idea is not to work yourself to the ground or stress yourself out with financial problems and submitting coursework to deadline dates, but to gain as much experience and knowledge as you can to better prepare yourself for the future. Finding useful and meaningful student jobs is a good way to enhance your employability prospects and makes you seem more focussed, and ambitious.

Recently there has been a rise in job agencies that target work specifically tailored to students and that is aimed at providing them useful work experience within their field of study. As many students are generally in need of money to finance their time at university and in need of some much needed work experience, this is an ideal opportunity for them to enhance their curriculum vitae without sacrificing their time for studying.

Student jobs like these are not conventional and are not difficult to obtain, if one is to approach the right agencies. As a student this may be somewhat difficult to comprehend, or even possibly impossible to obtain, however, from a business point of view this is in fact something that many corporate companies will look for. In light of the current economic downturn in the UK, employers will look for skilled individuals to complete projects or work at a low cost. Students with specific skills or are studying the right course for the company, will be taken on board, provided that they are able to demonstrate a sound knowledge of what they can provide.

For businesses the potential for hiring a student is much cheaper, and does not waste their time in hiring a professional, who will ultimately cost more for the company. This will also benefit the student as they will be gaining valuable experience, earning money whilst also learning and may potentially get a firm foot in the doorway to future employment with the same company. This in comparison to gaining a normal student job at a bar or shop, proves to keep the students time utilised better and does not waste time that could be used for studying, or revising. Taking part in work that is leading onto a good career allows the student to put the studies into practise, as well as get a better insight into what they would expect upon leaving university.
