Water is a very abundant chemical compound that is found everywhere on this planet. It comprises more than half of the globe's surface area and is also a vital necessity to human life. Today it has its many uses aside from keeping humans and a lot of other living things alive. From energy to tools to leisure, water has proven that its applications in our lives are practically limitless. What is even more amazing is the simplistic nature of its composition. Just two hydrogen molecules and one oxygen molecule creates the compound that controls and influences the way we live.
Along with all the benefits that water has given to us, it also has balance because the downsides that it presents to us are also very significant. Water damage is a very serious topic because of the extent and scope that it encompasses. As said, water is found almost everywhere so the probability for damages caused by this substance can also be found where ever this compound is present.
One serious aspect of water damage is its ability to deconstruct material. A property of water is that it is a universal solvent which means that it tends to slowly breakdown materials that are exposed to it back to their original state, as separate molecules. An example of this is the wear and tear of water on the foundation of a bridge. Eventually, after several decades, all kinds of bridges, regardless of how well they were built will require maintenance and further support. Even the toughest materials such as concrete and steel will eventually succumb to water damage over time. In a house, any sort of leaks or unexpected exposure to water may cause serious problems. Your paint and walls may slowly start to crack and deteriorate. Your electrical and plumbing system may get disrupted. There are many serious effects and they must be taken seriously.
Another aspect of water that also poses a danger to us is its ability to carry many different chemicals. Since it is a universal solvent, water is easily contaminated and because we ingest it everyday, we may get contaminated with harmful chemicals as well. In a city's water system, all it takes is one very bad leak and a few hours for the whole area to be drinking contaminated water.
A lot of respect must be given to this very simple element as we must strive to use it responsibly and always remember that it is a double-edged sword.
