Gestational diabetes occurs when blood sugar levels of the mother get elevated during pregnancy. Worldwide, approximately five percent of all pregnancies are diagnosed with this form of diabetes. Gestational diabetes normally manifests during the seventh month of pregnancy and disappears after childbirth.

Gestational diabetes can adversely affect the unborn child, because its symptoms often go unnoticed by the expectant mother. For this reason, routine blood sugar tests are recommended to diagnose it at the very onset. Gestational diabetes can result in troubling complications during childbirth and it is therefore vital for the mother to control blood sugar levels with a planned diet or recommended intakes of insulin. In left unmanaged or untreated, gestational diabetes could result in miscarriages or giving birth to an overweight baby. Even after birth, the baby should be constantly monitored till all body organ functions reach normalcy.

The risk of developing gestational diabetes is higher in women who belong to certain risk groups. For example, obese or overweight women have a higher risk of acquiring gestational diabetes. Previous mise miscarriages also increase the risk levels. Similarly, a family history of diabetes can also increase the chances of gestational diabetes. Finally, women over 30 run an increased risk of getting this form of diabetes. It is therefore crucial for women with these risk factors to seek a qualified diagnosis from a physician.

Expecting mothers who have been diagnosed with gestational diabetes should be aware that non-treatment of gestational diabetes poses a high risk both to the mother and the child. Therefore it is essential for the mother to adhere to a strict planned diet and engage in regular exercise for proper metabolic control. Regular intake of high-fiber diet can be very helpful in containing gestational diabetes. It is also crucial to regularly monitor the blood glucose levels will to ascertain if there is a need for insulin intake and medications. Proper care and management is vital and regular glucose monitoring by a qualified physician is recommended.

Gestational diabetes is a manageable condition. A well planned diabetic diet and a regular exercise regimen can be extremely beneficial in controlling the blood sugar levels. Managing gestational diabetes needs a strong will and health commitment by the expectant mother. A simple 30 minute brisk walk, if done regularly, can be extremely beneficial. Other forms of exercise such as Yoga can also help. However, it is highly recommended that the mother should consult a physician before starting any exercise program. A healthy lifestyle and well planned balanced diet can be the key factors to a healthy and complication free pregnancy. Gestational diabetes should not be taken lightly and should be diagnosed at the earliest. Once diagnosed, it is possible to avoid further complications by getting regular physician follow-ups and take medications if necessary.

So, if you have been diagnosed with gestational diabetes, remember that you can control your glucose levels with a proper healthy lifestyle. Your will power and self-effort can effectively manage this condition and help you bring to life a healthy baby.
