Rhinoplasty, septorhinoplasty and nose reshaping are all procedures which can be performed on the nose. Rhinoplasty, more commonly known as the nose job, is used to correct deformities of the nose such as to reduce the size, correct a bulbous nasal tip or reduce a lump, even to straighten the appearance of the nose.
These deformities can be caused by injury or illness or familial characteristics, post injury traumas of the nose can also cause anti social stigmas, promoting low self esteem and symptoms of becoming withdrawn. Although surgery can fix the external and the aesthetic appearance, it doesn't automatically cure the psychological problems which have been caused.
Septorhinoplasty is a procedure which concentrates on the septum, the septum is the divide between both sides of the nose, dividing the left and right nostril. The septum is a piece of pliable cartilage, ideally this cartilage should lie centrally but in most people it doesn't, in fact in nearly 80 percent of us the septum lays off to one side, however this often goes unnoticed and doesn't cause any problems. In some the problem is quite noticeable and gives the appearance of the nostrils being out of balance with one being significantly bigger than the other, this is known as a deviated septum. Septo plasty is the procedure used when operating on the septum alone.
Rhinoplasty and septo rhinoplasty are not the same surgical procedures, although in many cases will be used together.
Another way of altering the appearance of the nose and some minor problems is by non surgical nose reshaping; this uses injectable products such as evolence or restylene which allows surgeons to reshape the nose without having the risks or the recovery period of rhinoplasty.
Many opt for rhinoplasty as a form of cosmetic surgery, paying for the procedure in order to correct their appearance, for many this is purely a luxury, ironing out minor defects in appearance however for many, having a nose job is the end to many years of living with something they hate. It is often shown that people suffer more from the psychological effects bullying, name calling and low self esteem more than suffering with the actual nose, perhaps it doesn't cause any breathing or medical problems as such but has caused years of name calling and abuse.
Rhinoplasty has been performed for thousands of years, its name comes from the greek rhinos meaning nose and plassein meaning to shape, simply added together meaning nose shaping, this focused purely on the reconstructive side of rhinoplasty it wasn't until the 19th century that intranasal rhinoplasty was performed. Since which time the procedure has become one of the most common cosmetic surgery procedures to date.
