Anytime you deal with a Chicago courier service, you accept as a matter of course that you are going to have to pay a wide variety of fees and surcharges on your shipment. There is any number of reasons that you might incur these extra charges, such as afterhours delivery, an overweight or over sized package, or a delivery outside of certain prescribed zones that the courier has outlined. However, generally speaking, people do want to have a very strong understanding of what fees and charges they are going to pay before they ship, because it allows them to budget better for their shipping costs, and no one likes to get a bill and see that it is for much more than they expected. That is why the issue of a fuel surcharge comes up often, and why it is nice to know before you actually ship your items whether or not you will be faced with a fuel surcharge upon receiving your bill.
A fuel surcharge is not a means of extracting more money from you, the customer, although it can at times feel that way. What it is in actuality is the couriers attempt to keep its best employees with the company. Because courier drivers are required to fuel their vehicles themselves, if the company keeps them at their current wage when gas prices sky rocket, as they have several times in the last few years, then their employees will actually be taking what amounts to a severe pay cut in many cases, and before companies began assessing fuel surcharges they in fact would lose employees over this type of situation. So, if you've noticed that gas prices have been rising, then you can expect fairly certainly to see a fuel surcharge on your next shipping bill.
However, as with anything else, you can't be sure until you go to the source. If you ask your delivery company what charges you're going to face, including fuel surcharges, they are required to answer you honestly. If you don't catch it before hand and you notice on your next bill that your shipping costs have increased somewhat, you will probably see that increase itemized as a fuel surcharge somewhere on your statement, as it is the delivery companies only means of remaining profitable in the face of rising fuel costs. Unfortunately, this means the rising cost of fuel ultimately gets passed to you as the consumer.
