Social media sites are at an all time peak, the whole world is going crazy for sites such as Facebook, MySpace, YouTube and Twitter; do not get me wrong these sites are a great way to communicate with people including family and friends that you do not see very often.
But the more main stream the sites get, the more people start getting addicted to using them and this lead to less social time and more importantly to less work being done. This applies to both work and school student.
Education
At school and university a lot of people tend to want to go to a quiet computer room or library with computer access and do their assignments. But what is happening as of late is that the computer room is being full up with people just logging on to use the social sites, most schools do try to block access to these, but there are also numerous proxy sites that have become popular that by pass the schools filter, it would take an immense amount of resources to block every single proxy. But this does not help the people who are trying to get projects completed, as there is still the huge problem of not enough computers being allocated to the students
Work Place
The workplace is another place that is taking advantage of social media sites, people are becoming obsessed with checking their profiles every few minutes that they are making major mistakes, as they are not fully concentrating on tasks. Besides from this they are also not spending as much time on work related tasks as they used too.
Social media sites are a huge growing trend and they are going to be growing for years more to come, the hard thing about blocking these sites is the fact that they are becoming a much more useful tool to schools and work places, simply because of the fact that they are used as collaboration tools, basically meaning teachers can share documents and media with there students and bosses can share useful information with their employees. Besides this, most companies these days are looking for a way to further garner business and increase brand name, so blocking social networking sites would have a huge negative effect on their marketing campaigns. There has to be moderation of these sites being brought into place, because it could start to cause a wide variety of problems in the future.
