Electronic Tabla: A New Innovation on Todays Fusion Music

Due to innovations nowadays, even an electronic tabla is now available. Those who know, appreciate, or understand Hindi music can relate with me. It is a popular percussion instrument from India. It is basically a set of drums, as it is composed of two drums of different sizes, one smaller than the other. These two drums also have different tones or timbres.

Tablas are usually played by the palms and fingers, moving them extensively over the instrument, creating a variety of sounds. The heel of ones hand is usually used in a sliding motion or in applying pressure to it in order to change the pitch.

In the traditional form of this kind of musical instrument, it is composed of two drums of contrasting sizes, as mentioned earlier. The smaller one is usually placed on the right and is called dayan, but is more correctly called or referred to as the tabla. The dayan (the other term for the instrument) usually complements the melody and is tuned to either the dominant or sub dominant of the performers or soloists key. This drum usually provides the treble notes in this type of music and is also usually played by the dominant (a.k.a. the right hand). The larger of the two drums is placed on the right and is called bayan. This drum provides the much deeper bass tones of the music.

The traditional tabla drums are made out of a variety of materials, but usually of wood or metals. It is also pretty hard to adjust or modify the tones with the traditional ones and requires much skill. Also, historically, it served only as accompaniments to vocalists and other instrumentalists.

But then, the times have changed, and so have society and culture, and even this kind of drums have to keep up with these changes.

Slowly, players of this musical instrument developed their own solo performances and have thus begun performing alone, creating their very own styles and slowly breaking free from the old schools of music.

Also, with influence of Western music and culture, soon, Eastern and Western music was eventually fused. Nowadays, fusion of different musical elements is popularized by misers or DJs, frequently in clubs, to be used as dance music. Since the tones from the traditional tabla drums are usually drowned out by the other music, people then developed the electronic tabla.

Unlike its traditional kind, this device or instrument is obviously run by electricity. The beauty of this new innovation is that you need not to master the different techniques of tabla music to be able to play it. Also, an added feature is that you can also capture the various tonalities and nuances of the tabla, similarly like what an electric guitar does to an acoustic guitar.

Since this technology is just recent, there are still a few problems that need to be resolved. But still, DJs are now slowly using this new technology in their music, making todays musical fusion truly unique.

So, if you do not have the convenience of having or using the traditional drums, then maybe you would like to consider using or having the electronic tabla instead.
