Emotional Affairs: Prevention is Always Better than Cure

By : Matthew Stanton    99 or more times read

Emotional affairs deal a lot of damage to a relationship. When the right person comes, when marital needs are unmet, and when circumstances come together perfectly, harmful affairs can result. These affairs are relational traps that set your marriage in disarray, send the victimized partner into an emotional tragedy, and shake the children sense of security to the very core.

Yet, as always, an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure. In order to be successful in marriage, a guy should not only resist advances from a beautiful, curvaceous lady at the workplace; he should learn to turn a blind eye at the woman every single time and resist those tempting thoughts. In order to keep the marriage sweet and fulfilling, a woman should not only turn down invitations to dinner from a cute guy; she should not prolong talks with him in the first place.

A major thing to remember when keeping the marriage out of harm's way is to try to guard your affections. Both the man and the woman have affections to cater to and to consider. Never, for a second, treat your affections lightly. The Bible even advices us to protect your affections at all costs, because that is where the whole of your life comes from. Everything flavorful in life, its bits and pieces, the variety in experiences, and all the nitty-gritty details in between, all come from how much or how little you apply your affections to the mundane things in life. It is in this area that most men and women, who succumb to the temptations of an affair, fail. Couples must learn how and what to feel at any given situation, and should determine to tune out those things in life that are potential killers of relationships.

Another significant thing to keep in mind if you are intent on preserving a relationship is to focus on your partner more. That is, know what he or she needs for full marital bliss. Most often, the heartaches and pains in our life come from those unfulfilled needs. Couples who are at the most risk for affairs are those that have needs that are seriously lacking in attention, like the need for heart-to-heart conversation for women, honesty and openness (which is always a prerequisite to a blessed marriage), or for men, the need for domestic support. Every man and woman has these needs that are to be met only within the exclusive premises of a marriage.

To lessen the chances of emotional affairs, never underestimated the power of felt needs. Unmet needs will gnaw at the person's psyche and emotional health. When these needs are not fulfilled by the partner, the risk of an outside affair will grow exponentially, since the affected spouse will only grow hungry for more attention to a particular need. When a husband is lazy and has no initiative in finding work around, the wife will probably find a cash-strapped executive an attractive prospect. Or when a husband's headstrong wife does not go out with him on his occasional golf binges. Try to watch out for things that you've failed to give to your spouse and discipline yourself in fulfilling those needs, in order to kill the risk of emotional affairs.
