Whether most companies know it or not, Internet branding is a reality. It's not enough anymore to rely on your company's 100-year-old reputation. The fact of the matter is, most people will search online to evaluate a product before buying it. The one that has the best branding will most likely get the sale over the others.
Unfortunately, just because a product has a better brand on the Internet than the others, it doesn't mean that it's actually the best one. What it does mean is that they've probably paid more attention to how they're portrayed on the Internet. They may have even made efforts to make their competition, which may include you, look bad there. The net result is that unless you stay on top of your reputation, someone can ruin it for you quickly.
In business, reputation is everything. Empires have been built and have fallen over this one quality. Enron appeared to be strong until it was released that there were unethical practices afoot there. Exxon took a plunge in stock value every time one of their freighters crashed. The list goes on.
There are several approaches to protecting your Internet brand. The first, and best, is prevention. It costs much less in time and resources to preemptively put out a good name for your business and products. If you don't have anything to defend against, then it follows that all that time and energy can be spent elsewhere.
The first thing that can be done to this end is to get a web presence. Nearly every business out there has a website. If you're the only company with your name, you're virtually guaranteed first page placement on Google. If you expand on this with additional pages, it's entirely possible to take up the whole first page.
This step alone is incredibly helpful in deterring the spread of negative reviews and libelous articles. When shopping for a product or reviews, many consumers don't venture past the first one or two pages of search engines. If you have this covered in the majority, people will mostly see what you have to say about your company and its products.
Your presence on the first page can also be expanded by using social marketing techniques, typically called Web 2.0. Briefly, this amounts to articles, blogging and affiliate marketing, as well as several other techniques, to have your name mentioned in as many different places as possible.
