What Dream Career are You Dreaming?

"The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams." - Eleanor Roosevelt

I've just watched the video now sweeping the Internet, of Susan Boyle singing "I Dreamed a Dream" from Les Miserables on 'Britain's Got Talent' show.

Her soul-stirring rendition of this powerful song brought the audience to its feet in cheers and tears.

But that was not the most remarkable moment. What was remarkable is that Susan is a 47-year-old, unemployed woman who has never sung before a large audience and wants to be a professional singer.

She looks 47, and is not stylish or beautiful. And when she stated her age and her ambition, the audience, including the judges, tittered a bit with cynicism and doubt.

And then she began to sing.

Within the first bar, everyone in that auditorium knew they were witnessing something extraordinary. She stirred their souls with her beautiful voice and heartfelt rendition. Instantly, an audience of skeptics was transformed into an adoring audience of fans.

I don't know what Susan's future holds, but I am sure she will not be an unemployed person from a small English village for long.

This event captures in a few minutes what I have been talking about for years and what the quotation from Eleanor Roosevelt refers to.

"The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams."

Susan wants to be a professional singer; she always wanted to perform in front of a large audience; she has been singing and performing (in small venues) since she was 12.

For 35 years she has had a dream. She sought her opportunity. She risked being ridiculed on British television because her dream was stronger than her fear.

She, quite literally, put herself 'out there.'

How many of us are willing to risk everything for the beauty of the dream we have within? How many of us will look for, and take, the opportunities to potentially live the dream?

As Eleanor Roosevelt implies, our dreams have beauty in them. They certainly have meaning, not only to us, but to others as well.

As we express the beauty and meaning within into outward form as Susan did, we stir something in the souls of others, not just our own.

Look at the beauty of a great architectural creation or piece of sculpture. What about the hum of a carefully tuned and powerful engine? What about the serenity of a quiet country garden?

Beauty, and other soul qualities, can be expressed in many ways. But they must be expressed.

I read once of an angel taking a human on a guided tour of extraordinary creations of art, music, inventions, architecture and the like. The human marveled and asked the angel, "What is this place?" And the angel answered, "These are all the inventions that were intended to be created by humankind over the years - and never were."

Henry David Thoreau expressed the same idea when he said, "Most people die with their music still in them."

What about you?

What do you have a burning desire to create? What dream career is calling you? What music is still in you?

In my own life, I have sometimes risked and sometimes I have remained in my comfort zone, safely hidden. But there is no real safety in hiding - no satisfaction either.

What I have learned is that when I have taken risks, the outcomes always led to more and better surprises than I could have anticipated. New doors opened up; promotions and bigger assignments were available.

Best of all, I had the deep satisfaction of knowing I was fulfilling my purpose. And I know as I did that, I influenced other people in positive ways, adding to my own joy in expression.

Dreams come from the depths of the soul. They can be denied only to our detriment.

Choose now to let your dreams be expressed in your life. Recognize and celebrate the beauty of your dreams - then create them!
