You probably played in the dirt a lot as a kid. You dug up the earth, created castles, and drove toy cars on the small dirt roads. You might have had entire make believe adventures in the small worlds that you created in your back yard, the sandbox or in any patch of dirt that your parents would let you play in. As an adult, it is harder to get away with playing in the dirt. That is why so many adults work so hard at starting a garden. As gardeners, you have reasons to get outside and work in the dirt however often your heart desires. If you have thought about beginning your own garden, here are some things you should do if you want to make sure your garden is successful.
Try not to let your seedlings dry out all the way. While it is true that some plants thrive in dry soil conditions that does not mean that they can go without being watered at all. Every single seedling you grow is going to need to be watered. You don't have to let your seedlings sit in mud, obviously, but you need to give them at least a little bit of moisture if you want to keep them alive. How much water you will need to feed to your plants will depend on what type of plants you are trying to grow. Learn how often and how much to water your seedlings before you plant them. You don't want your garden to drown or dry out! Good gardening requires the gardener to be patient. It takes a long time before the plants send up shoots and you can see your hard work literally come to life--you'll just have to be patient while you wait for that to happen. The only way to avoid having to wait for this period to pass is to buy seedlings that are already sprouted from a nursery. If you don't want to spend any money on plants that you don't grow yourself you will have to be patient and keep up on your garden maintenance while you wait for your seeds to sprout and flourish. Don't worry if it takes a few weeks or even a month or two before you see things start to break through the top layer of the soil.
Don't purchase every tool in the garden shop just because they're hanging there. Start with a few things you know you'll need (spades, rakes and hoses) and then build your collection slowly from there. The more you work outside the more you will learn about which tools you actually use a lot and which tools you almost never use at all. Don't let yourself get talked into buying a bunch of tools you don't need by the garden department clerk. It's possible that you'll spend too much money on things that you won't ever use.
Anybody can start a garden. The trick to having a thriving garden is to take steps to ensure that you approach your new hobby the right way. You need to do some advance planning and plant research if you want your garden to flourish and thrive. Once you've learned about keeping your garden healthy and have established a nourishment routine, doing your "gardening chores" will take on a far more enjoyable feeling. You might even find that you look forward to playing in your garden every day!
