April 22 is Earth Day around the world; a day where people around the globe come together and take time out to think about how their actions affect the environment. They take steps beyond bringing out the recycling bins for a day to offset the footprint they make on their surroundings.
While the celebration has managed to increase in popularity in recent years, a focus on global health isn't a new idea. It is a celebration of the first Earth Day and the coming together of the planetary community to achieve a common goal. The History Of Earth Day
Until the 1970s, society was enjoying a carefree life in terms of pollution and was all too happy to drive around and suck resources from the earth. A Wisconsin U.S. Senator by the name of Gaylord Nelson changed all that by suggesting a protest to wake up the government to the plight of the natural environment.
On April 22, 1970, 20 million people came out across the country to show the world they are tired of officials failing to take the necessary steps to protect the various ecosystems around the world. This wasn't achieved again until 1990 when people from 141 different countries supported the cause through an increase in the use of recycling bins and other environmental initiatives.
Earth Day 2009
The 2009 celebration is all about preparing for its 40th Anniversary the following year. The theme is 'The Green Generation Campaign.' To help reinforce this theme, the activities are based on three main ideas: stopping the consumption of fossil fuels, focusing on sustainable consumption on an individual level, and enhancing the green economy and educational systems.
Major cities across the country planned events, which included some of the biggest names in music and some unforgettable concerts. Many cities around the world including Manila, Tokyo, and Buenos Aires participated as well. With activities planned throughout the month of April and so many different kinds, there is something for everyone. What You Can Do For The Event
