Also, without a proper knowledge of search engine optimization, your Internet branding will probably not be used to its full potential. For how useful IT is for other things, they simply aren't equipped to really push an Internet presence as far as it can go. Again, all they can really do is build and maintain a web page.
What they can't do for you is get your page ranked. There are ways to get a web page a high ranking on the search engines that simply don't enter the skill set of IT. They are also not likely to be able to maintain blog accounts or other Web 2.0 properties to increase your exposure.
In the end, you should let IT do their job. Let them handle your in-office networks and connectivity. Leave your web promotions to experts in the field. A good search engine marketing firm is the way to go.
