I had always been a shy wall flower and when I started my new job within the office I felt pretty isolated and shrank back even more to avoid too many social situations. It got to the point that I felt pretty miserable not talking to anyone, but because I had always been like that it was difficult to break the cycle. I avoided after work drinks and social situations like the plague and did not feel apart of the companies team at all.
One day at work our manager gathered us all together and spoke about some plans she had for this summer, our department was going to be taking a day off to go on a team building course. At first I was absolutely terrified at this idea and contemplated not turning up at all and pretending to be ill. But as I looked around the office I saw how many people I would be letting down and the effort that our manager had gone to get this course.
Well the dreaded day arrived and feeling like a bundle of nerves I pulled myself together to expect the worst. How wrong I was! The day was actually set around us all having fun and working as a team. We ended up doing a team building activity that was set on a secret agent theme, I thought it was going to be silly but actually ended up having a real laugh.
Not only that, but I began to interact with my office, the people I had found intimidating before I soon realized were pretty similar to me. In fact one woman in the office I had never spoken to ended up being one of the nicest people I've met for a long time. She admitted herself that she had been extremely nervous at the prospect of a team building event but had really enjoyed it.
So by the end of the day I was laughing and getting on really well with my new found colleagues, it was really refreshing to get away from the office and meet people as they are away from working life. By the end of the day we ended up in the pub getting to know each other even more, even our manager came along and got involved.
Nowadays I now feel that I get on better with the people I work with than ever before. When things get stressful or testing in the office I feel like I can speak my mind to my colleagues without worries. I guess we should all thank our manager for arranging such a great team building day and would highly recommend it to any company in a heart beat.
