The businesses of New York, that have goods to ship, are going to require the services of a shipping or courier service. The level of services they need is going to depend greatly on what is being shipped. All shipping costs are based on weight and how the goods are to be shipped. One of the terms that businesses need to be aware of is LTL delivery service. This stands for shipping that is less than a truckload of goods. FTL is a full truckload. Full truckload shipping companies would need enough goods to fill an entire 18-wheeler with goods. It would either have to have all the goods coming from one place; say a semi full of potato chips from a manufacturer, or a truck full of goods for a destination; like a department store.
LTL delivery services are designed for loads less than that full truck mentioned above but too large for a standard package delivery company. Anything over about 100 pounds is going to be in this range. The expense would be far less on 1000 pounds of goods using LTL delivery then using a package company for the same amount of goods. For those loads that are less than 100 pounds you are best served by a New York courier service instead of a LTL delivery service. Often your courier service will work directly with the LTL servicer you have found, but that will depend on the deals you can make with the delivery service and the nature of what is being shipped.
What normally happens with LTL delivery services is they combine a number of smaller loads into one large truck and then send that truck on the majority of the way. For New York residents you might find that your LTL sends your entire load to Stockton, a common port for such large loads. Los Angeles might make sense as well again depending on the destination for the goods.
Once the long haul has been completed, the LTL shipper separates the various loads into other trucks for shipping closer to the final destination. There can be several of these small jumps before your package reaches its destination. The advantage of such shipping is that it will cost a lot less than package delivery agencies, but it will take longer to arrive. Often, New York businesses will offer faster delivery but the additional cost could be extraordinary depending on the customer's needs.
