Tips for Preparing for Health Care Licensure Examinations

If you have ever considered entering the field of health care, now is an excellent time. Health care is one of the fastest growing sectors of the economy. Options for work in this area are not limited to 'doctors and nurses'. Allied health jobs make up the largest portion of professional healthcare positions. Most allied health workers must complete a 2 or 4-year college degree and obtain certification to be eligible for employment. While exact licensure requirements will vary by health care specialty as well as state and local regulations, all licensed healthcare positions require successful completion of a written exam.

There are several different types of exams within health care fields including entrance exams that determine a potential student's suitability for the academic program and exit exams that qualify one for licensure. Preparing for any test can be intimidating, and particularly a test that holds such importance for your future. There are a number of things that you can do to get ready for your exam.

Experts recommend beginning your preparation for any exam as far in advance as possible. The most important thing that you can do to prepare for a test is to find out as much as you can about it. Know what format the questions will be, the material that will be covered and the time allotted for the test. This information will greatly assist you in developing a study plan to address your individual needs. Most testing companies offer short packets that describe the test and include some practice questions. There are hundreds of websites devoted to various certification exams- use these resources.

This brings us to the next tip, which is: practice, practice, and practice. After you have reviewed the material that will be included in the exam, do practice questions or better still a practice test. There are many books available for purchase or at your local library, which contain entire practice tests. Taking a timed exam will allow you to realistically assess your strengths and weaknesses and tailor your remaining study time accordingly. Many universities and tutoring centers offer test prep classes. If you are able to attend such a class, do so. Not only will you get to practice your exam-taking skills and review material; you'll benefit from the teacher's knowledge of both the subject and the test.

Employing smart test-taking strategies is another way to increase your score. Simply being certain to carefully read all directions and questions will eliminate many careless mistakes that cost people points. After you've done that, go through and answer the easiest questions first. You are bound to encounter some questions that you don't know the answer to- at least not at first glance. Immediately determine if you can eliminate any obviously wrong answers. Still don't have any idea? You can increase the odds of answering correctly if you remember that correct answers to multiple-choice questions are often:

* The longest answer.
* One of two answers that are nearly identical.
* The 'middle of the road' answer. If the answer is numerical, choose the one that is in the middle of the range of answers.
* 'All of the above' where the 'above' choices are all approximately the same length and related to each other.

Preparing for a certification examination does take time and diligence, but all of that hard work will pay off as you embark on your new career.
