What does a BOL Do?

BOL stands for Bill of Lading. Transportation of goods either between businesses or between business and customers is taken care of by a courier. If a business is shipping goods to an international destination from the city of Philadelphia, they will use a trusted courier service to get their goods into other countries. When shipping goods to a different country there are a number of documents and forms that need to be filled out and presented in order to avoid issues with either the shipping service or with the border crossings and customs. Every company that needs to transport goods needs to be aware of these forms and should be accompanied by a commercial invoice that clearly shows the mutual agreement between the buyer and the seller of the goods. This is what is called Bill of Lading which is in fact an agreement between the shipper and the courier company.

The Philadelphia courier service will not transport your goods until you have a completed bill of lading. The Bill of Lading will clearly state an agreement between you or your company and the shipping company or the courier service. The bill should and will clearly show the goods that are going to be shipped, their entry or point of origin, and where they are to be shipped to. The bill will also state the dates and the amount agreed upon for the shipping of these goods. These documents help track all imports, exports and domestic transportation of goods. This also helps both parties maintain complete records of the transactions made along with the shipments.

When you ship your goods internationally, the courier will require a BOL or Bill of Lading since many custom agencies and boarders require a valid bill of lading so that the company can easily move any goods across their boarder. All countries have various laws governing both imports and exports along with various taxes, duties, and fees etc that apply. These things also need to be tracked carefully to ensure that international laws are obeyed. A valid bill of lading is just one part of a series of documents that the customs use as tools to ensure that laws are being abided and that all the required fees have been paid. When your company has a valid and completed BOL you can avoid many delays in your shipping or holdups caused by incomplete documentation when it is time for your goods to cross international borders.
