If there's one word that every American is getting heartily sick of hearing by this point, it's recession-with global warming coming in a very close second as abnormal weather patterns have everyone's nerves on edge. As abstract ideas become a reality for today's Maine drivers, the state is stepping up to the plate and encouraging its residents to help themselves and their environment at the same time.
How are they doing that? By hopping behind the wheel of a hybrid.
Originally considered almost laughable by most citizens, an idea straight out of a science fiction novel, today's electric hybrid cars are very much a reality-and doing their role to help Maine drivers protect their environment. The number one factor believed to be behind the greenhouse effect and global warming is the emissions given off by the billions of drivers on highways around the world. Eliminating (or at least decreasing) those emissions would go a long way toward minimizing further damage until steps can be taken to make clean fuel a possibility as well.
Hybrid cars are accomplishing this by putting electric power and fossil fuels together into one very appealing package. The average electric hybrid (which is the kind primarily making a splash on the industrial market today-there aren't many Americans that haven't at least heard of the Toyota Prius thanks to comedian Jeff Dunham!) combines a gasoline engine with an electric battery to give the car the burst of power it needs without having to burn extra gas to do it. As the car accelerates the electric battery lends it power, the car burns less fuel and there are fewer emissions.
The fact that it has fewer emissions makes it great for the environment. The fact that it burns less fuel makes it great for the economy in the wake of gas prices from coast to coast reaching historic highs is good for the economy, helping drivers get more "bang for their buck" while at the same time knowing they're doing the best they can to contribute to maintaining clean air for their children. (The fact that most car insurance providers offer a discount to policy holders driving hybrids doesn't hurt either.)
In an effort to encourage their drivers to buy a hybrid rather than one of their less expensive, gasoline burning cousins, Maine is leading the way by implementing cleaner emissions standards in their county school buses to protect their students and advertising the potential tax credits available to hybrid owners. The bottom line is that global warming and recession are both facts that we as a country can't ignore. Hybrid cars are helping Maine drivers take steps to deal with both.
