Whether you're a business or an individual trying to send a courier, you probably have a few different kinds of insurance under your belt already - life insurance, insurance for goods, medical insurance, insurance for work, pet insurance etc. Almost everything of value is insured these days so if you're sending a package, would that need insurance as well? Sure if you're sending something halfway across the world, insurance should definitely be considered. But, if you're using a Miami courier service to just send something across town, is it really necessary?
What you need to do first of all is have a chat with your courier company. Most courier companies provide some sort of insurance that covers your package. In addition to insuring their courier delivery vehicles, drivers and other things related to their business, a lot of companies also insure customer packages up to a certain fixed amount. So in case your package is lost, stolen or damaged in any way, the courier service is liable to cover you for it. If the maximum value of their insurance is enough to cover your package, then you needn't worry about getting shipping insurance.
However, if you're shipping a package that contains goods that are significantly more valuable than the insurance provided by your courier company, then you need to seriously consider insurance that will protect you better. Often, your courier company will probably be able to help you out. Several companies have tie ups with insurances companies and they can probably arrange a package deal for you which might end up costing you lesser.
How much you insure for is of course dependent on what you're shopping. If your goods are worth $600, then your insurance should cover you for the whole amount. If the goods you're sending are particularly valuable, our advice would be to take out the best possible insurance so you are protected in case anything goes wrong and your package is lost, damaged or stolen. However, if your items are not so valuable, you could simply stick with the maximum declared value insurance provided by your courier company.
Insuring a package might seem like an unnecessary expenditure and many people don't bother getting insurance. Most of the time nothing goes wrong and the package reaches the receiver exactly the way it was supposed to. However, on the rare occasion that something goes wrong, not having insurance means losing out entirely. So get insurance, and stay safe.
