Official terms can be so confusing, and all you're trying to do is send a courier! So if you're ready to ship something or using a courier company, you've probably seen the term 'Declared Value' and wondered what it was. It doesn't matter where you're sending your package; you will always have to list a declared value. So whether you're using a Miami courier service to send a package to someone within Miami or you're using it to send a package abroad, you'd still have to write down a declared value.
By getting you to write down the declared value of a package you're sending, the courier service is simply asking you to estimate how much you think the package is worth, and make an official declaration of it. This is important because your declared value is the maximum amount that the courier company will be liable for if something goes wrong and your package is damaged of lost. This value is not necessarily reflective of how much your shipment is actually valued at however. Each company has its own maximum value limits and your package must fit these standards. In addition, the declared value of your package will also be dependent on the exact type of courier service you may be using. So while a messenger delivery package may have less declared value, cross country cargo is likely to be valued at more.
So what should you do if your package is worth more than the maximum delivered value of your courier company? If something happens to your shipment, your courier company is definitely going to be held liable for it and the declared value makes that entire amount payable to you. However, even if something happens to your expensive package, the company will only be liable to pay you the maximum declared value. To protect yourself in such circumstances, it is advisable to get insurance for valuable and expensive packages.
If you'd like to insure your package, consider talking to your company in the first instance. Many courier companies have agreements with insurance companies that can get you the services you're looking for, at a lower rate. However, if your courier service is unable to provide you with adequate insurance options, you will need to look for package insurance yourself. There is usually no limit on how much you can insure a package for, so pick an amount that you think will cover you adequately.
