In the beginning of this Universal Life Church course on Spiritual Development, the author asks the question, "Why do we mess with spiritual endeavors?" Intriguing question. I think most of us on an active spiritual path should ask this question more often. It’d be most inspiring, especially when we go through those sad, dark times when we’re feeling less than spiritual. One answer is "that we are more than our physical bodies." I like this; it’s great stuff! Effort, Will & Intent what a great by-product we don’t really think of things in this way but we should. I like the thinking of reaching across a void to touch the mind of God. I think many of us spend our whole lives trying whether consciously or subconsciously to “get into Gods mind”; for only if we knew what he was really thinking could we explain our universe. We humans tend to make it all so complicated.
We don’t understand the clarity of our own message and yet to strive to clarify Gods. How can anyone ever assume they knew what God wanted or intended for us other than to be the best we can? We have limited brain and limited understanding of the world around us. His morning I watched a physicist explain the finding of another planet and what it might mean. It was fascinating not only because there may be other life out there but because it shows the extent in which our brains can be used if we actually use them. Although it was about science it shows that God created something much bigger than what we know and see. I am curious why he shows us his creations in pieces. Does he feel we cannot handle it all at once or is it because he wants us to work at finding it? Either way it is wonderful.
Another avenue for change is to recognize that now is all we truly have. Yesterday is the ancient past and tomorrow is but a dream that’s not here yet. Certainly, we can learn from the past and plan for the future, but NOW is all there really is. I have heard other people talk about living in the now is like receiving a gift, a present because we’re actually living in the present, the NOW. I have heard of this idea before, but never really took it to heart.
After this ULC Seminary Course, I was motivated to actually live this way and to receive the benefits of life that are in the now, not in the past or the future but in the NOW.
I know a lot of people today that are getting or considering divorce. I find this so sad. I frequently ask them to look at what they used to share with each other. They had a connection at one point. Is it completely lost or just buried under the clutter? We all have so much clutter in our lives that we forget we are human and we need to take time or ourselves and each other. Life is a gift. It’s the best gift we will ever get. Yet, so many waste it trying to obtain the impossible without knowing that what they really want/need is directly in front of them.
