The mind works at different frequencies when it's doing different things. There are five different basic frequency ranges that the mind can be in and they are each associated with a different type of activity.
There's Delta waves which are associated with deep dreamless sleep, there's Theta waves which are associated with dreams and deep meditation, there's Alpha waves which are associated with relaxation (while still awake), there's Beta waves which are associated with normal day to day activity, and there's Gamma waves which are associated with higher mental activity such as problem solving.
Audio files with binaural beats can be listened to in order "synchronize" the mind to a certain frequency level in order to put the mind into a certain state (such as Alpha or Theta) that it's not normally in. This may be done in order to hypnotize oneself or to meditate more easily.
In order to for this effect to work binaural beats audio files must be listened to while wearing headphones because the concept works by hearing one tone in the left ear and another tone in the right ear. The difference between these two tones creates a "beat" in the mind. The frequency of the beat can be increased or decreased based on the difference between the two tones.
An example of this is if a 500 Hz sine wave is played in the left ear and a 510 Hz sine wave is played in the right ear there should be a 10 Hz frequency beat created in the mind which correlates to Alpha wave brain functioning. By listening to these tones a person can become more relaxed and more easily be able to go into a state of hypnosis or meditation. Going into these kinds of different mind states can be useful for self improvement and for self exploration.
For the binaural beats concept to work the two tones must be close enough that they are not heard as two separate tones, that means they must be within about 30 Hz.
Most people's minds are normally operating around the 20 Hz mark during day to day activities so often binaural beat audio files will start off with a frequency difference between the left tone and the right tone of about 20 Hz (so that it's not immediately shocking to the mind) and then slowly decreases that difference until it's at the destination frequency (for example 7 Hz may be the goal.)
Listening to binaural beats audio files can be a very interesting experience and it is well suited for anyone who is interested in exploring their own consciousness or altered states of consciousness. Like previously mentioned it can also be used for more practical purposes such as making self improvement hypnotic messages (such as helping one to stop smoking) more effective.
