In case you haven't noticed, we are in the midst of an energy crisis. The ever-increasing demand for energy is rapidly outstripping supply. Most exerts agree that we have reached peak oil and that supplies will only go down hill from here. Less oil means higher cost. Oil is dirty and bad for the environment anyway. It is time to move on from the fossil fuels. The security of us as individuals and a nation require it. It is also our obligation as stewards of the planet.
We have always known that the energy we use everyday is not unlimited, yet we take it for granted. Oil, gas, power, even water has limited availability. Yet, we have not taken enough precautions to deal with the energy crisis. We is not just the energy companies and governments. 'We' is every individual that can do something about. That is you and me, us, we! We can make a difference. If every citizen if the United States were to improve efficiency or cut usage by one gallon a day, that would be over 300 million gallons of oil every day. That adds up in a hurry. It also makes for a cleaner, safer world. Who doesn't want to live in a cleaner, safer place. I do.
Oil and gas are already too expensive. Wouldn't you like to spend less for your energy?
How soon will we run out of fossil fuels? Sooner than you think, especially if demand continues to increase at present rates. We have already exhausted 50 percent of the available oil. At the current rate of consumption, the rest of the oil will finish in 32 years! Imagine if the rate of consumption increases! Consumption of fossil fuels is increasing.
You say, 'yes but what can I do about that. It is such a big problem I cannot possibly do anything about oil and energy. That's the government's problem.' You are wrong. We can do something about. If we all do a little the problem will be tackled. For starters, we need to understand the importance of energy in our lives and stop taking it for granted. We have to minimize the use of oil, gas, electricity, or any other fuel. We cannot afford to waste any available energy. It is also important to spread awareness about limited availability of energy resources. Simple things like joining a car pool, turn off lights, switch to compact fluorescent bulbs, turn down the thermostat, wear a sweater inn the winter, sweat a little in the summer, switching off car engines at traffic lights, and minimizing the use of gas and oil in everyday activities will help a long way in crisis-readiness. We can also generate our own electricity. Wind and solar are options that you can explore and deploy at your home. As a responsible human being, start looking for alternate energy solutions like solar energy and wind energy. Employing these alternate power solutions is extremely feasible and cost-effective. You will not only cut down your power bills but also contribute to a better future of the world.
