Dreams are something that we are all familiar with, because we all dream. You may think you don't but you do for sure, it's just that you don't remember your dreams. Even though dreams are something familiar to us, they still remain a strange phenomenon.
Why does a part of us keeps living experiences at night in the astral dimension, while our physical body is sleeping and regenerating in bed? Let's face it: some of our dreams seem more real than waking life! Why? What are they trying to tell us? The Chinese say that a dream that is not interpreted is like a letter that is unopened. Plato maintains that dreams are messages from the Gods who try to help us. No matter where they come from (God or our own consciousness), dreams have something to tell us. They can shed light on different things that we experience in life. They reveal aspects of our psychology, foretell events that will take place in our life, and may even show us the right path.
Carl Gustav Jung said that dreams are the language that speaks to our consciousness. Well, just as with any language, it is possible for anyone to learn the language of dreams. For sure, dream interpretation can be challenging, especially at the beginning. The symbolism of dreams is rich and complex. Each symbol has different meanings, depending on the context in which it appears. Yet, if one makes real efforts to remember his dreams and write them down, dream interpretation will eventually become possible.
Some symbols appear recurrently in our dreams, and they usually take on a specific meaning for us. The nice thing is that the symbols that we see in dreams usually have a similar function or meaning as they have in life. For example, jewels will often represent values or virtues that we either have or must develop, depending if we wear them or buy them. Doors often correspond to choices we have to make; opened doors represent possibilities, whereas closed doors foretell some obstacles.
So dream interpretation is largely a matter of analogy, although in some cases (which are a minority), it is the law of contraries that applies. Fortunately, there exist different dreams dictionaries which facilitate dream interpretation. Those are useful because they generally provide information about the general symbolism of things, in addition to suggesting a variety of potential meanings for each symbol.
