What Dangers Lurk in Your Hair Shampoo?

By : Phoenix Delray    99 or more times read

There are so many types and textures of hair that it can be confusing trying to find a hair shampoo that will thoroughly cleanse while it nourishes because not all products are suitable for all types and textures.

Someone who has curly hair that is dry or brittle would not want to use a clarifying shampoo because they tend to strip essential oils and minerals off of strands in addition to product build up. Someone with excess oils produced naturally would want to steer clear of extra nourishing shampoo, because they may contain many ingredients that will sit on strands, making them appear greasy. But what if the person who has oily hair also has fine, limp, and lifeless locks? Herein lies the problem that many have when trying to solve the product puzzle.

Fortunately, products these days are labeled fairly well for the types of manes that they should be used on. On the flip side though, many (if not most) of those products will scream Use me! Use me! but will not say Dont use me if your hair is.. To figure out the maze of dos and donts, youll need to focus on one thing and one thing only: the list of ingredients in your hair shampoo.

While there are many ingredients to search for in a hair shampoo, there are also plenty of ingredients that you will want to avoid, no matter what condition your hair is in. The first one is Isopropyl Alcohol, which is commonly used in antifreeze and shellac. Two more to avoid are sodium lauryl sulphate and sodium laureth sulphate. These have protein denaturing properties, and since hair is made of protein, these ingredients can lead to inhibited hair growth, damaged hair follicles, and poor quality hair overall.
It may come as a shock to many people, but a hair shampoo that says that it contains fragrance can actually contain 4,000 different chemicals in it.

Formaldehyde is also used often in products as an inhibiting agent against carcinogen production even though it is a carcinogen itself. It can weaken the immune system and causes allergic reactions, chronic fatigue, and other symptoms. You will also want to be on the lookout for parabens, which are known also by Propyl, Methyl, Butyl, and Ethyl prefixes. These are preservatives that are used to inhibit the growth of microbials in hair shampoo and other hair care products, but the concern lies in the fact that those ingredients are known to be highly toxic themselves.
