Beautiful Nails Start With Healthy Nails: Some Tips

Every woman wants to have more beautiful-looking nails, but not everyone can afford or wants to visit a manicurist on a regular basis. Beautiful nails start with good health habits and a regimen for hand care. Here are some tips.

-- Don't touch cuticles

Most women cut or push back their cuticles as a matter of second nature and think nothing of it, but health experts counsel against doing anything with cuticles at all! The cuticle keeps bacteria and other harmful substances from getting under the nail bed and wreaking havoc. When that natural defense mechanism is monkeyed with, nails are left vulnerable to infection and even irreversible damage. Besides the health hazards, cuticles that are micromanaged often end up looking torn, red, or swollen. It's best to just leave well enough alone.

-- Make sure to moisturize nail beds and cuticles regularly

This is an especially good tip for women who live in dry and arid climates such as the desert southwest of the United States. Just as living in dry climates can lead to dry hair and skin, it can also make for excessively dry nails. Dry nails are more prone to chip, break, and even split. Using cuticle oil on both the cuticles and the nail beds once a week will go a long way toward helping to maintain strong, healthy fingernails.

-- Use non-acetone nail polish remover

Although non-acetone remover is most often associated with preserving acrylic nails, it works wonders for natural nails as well. Acetone strips nails of their natural oils and can lead to brittleness and breakage. Women who think they can use acetone removers because their nails are natural should rethink their purchasing habits. Non-acetone remover doesn't cost any more than the other kind.

-- Use rubber gloves

Mom and Grandma really knew what they were doing when they wore rubber gloves to do housework! Exposure to harsh cleaning chemicals can do a whole lot of damage to nails. Women's hands are notoriously hard working and require protection if they want to stay looking their best. Many nail problems can be traced to the effects of environmental factors.

-- Lead a healthy lifestyle

Good nutrition and adopting a healthy lifestyle makes as much difference for nails as it does to hair and skin. Limit consumption of alcohol, don't smoke, and eat as many fruits and vegetables as possible throughout the day. It's easy to forget sometimes that our nails are natural extensions of our bodies and are affected by everything we do and everything we ingest, so treat them with kindness.
