When you're talking about the environment you're not just talking about something that a band of fanatics have decided to protect-although to hear people talk about environmentalists you'd think that was all there was to it! The environment is our most precious resource. Without it we wouldn't have food, clothing, homes, water, air or any of the other things we need to survive. And if we continue destroying it at the rate we have been for the past several decades there won't be any of that left for our children.
That's why environmentalists, concerned citizens and government officials are urging drivers to go green.
Factory and automobile emissions count for a huge percentage of the carbon footprint we're leaving on the earth and are believed to be the instigators of the perceived Greenhouse Effect that's leading to global warming-a phenomenon we can no longer deny as it comes right to our doors. The most effective way for us to stop this trend is to go green when we're out on the highways.
The first step we need to take to go green is to get off the roads. Period. Walking, biking and sailing are exponentially better for the environment than driving around closed up in a car, and because we're exposed to the environment we have the chance to truly appreciate it ourselves! (Not to mention it's an excellent way to get some exercise without having to pay astronomical fees to go to the gym.)
Since it's impractical to walk fifteen or twenty miles to get where you need to go, or travel around outside when it's raining cats and dogs and you have to show up in the office looking like something resembling a business professional, most cities offer public transportation-and they urge their drivers to take advantage of it. While you can't go green entirely, by joining forces with twenty or thirty other concerned citizens you can greatly decrease the amount of emissions in the air. One vehicle gives off considerably less pollution than twenty or thirty!
Consider investing in a hybrid. These cars by their very nature encourage you to go green by partially replacing the gasoline your car burns with electricity. This allows you to double your mileage (the Toyota Prius has been known to get over 48 miles to the gallon on the highway), minimize your emissions and dramatically decrease the amount of pollution you're giving off into the atmosphere.
If you can't afford to invest in a hybrid right now there are other things you can do to go green. Keep your car in good shape. Cars that have been allowed to fall into disrepair burn more fuel, and as a result they give off more emissions. Take your car in for its annual tune-up, and don't forget to have the oil and filter changed every 3,000 miles.
Stay off the highway during rush hour to avoid stop and go traffic that places an unnecessary drain on your gas tank, forcing you to burn more fuel into the atmosphere. Schedule your work schedule so you're off the highways either before or after peak times, allowing you to drive home uninterrupted and undisturbed.
We all have an obligation to go green for our environment, if not for ourselves than for our children. Remember, once this earth is gone it's gone, and we can never get it back. Isn't it worth taking care of something that precious?
