Piercing your tongue is very dangerous. It can kill you as well as let you bleed to death if done improperly. That is why, when deciding to pierce your tongue, please do not do it by yourself unless piercing is your profession. Although the tongue is noted to be healing quickly, doing it improperly can still inflict permanent damage.
If you really want to have your tongue pierced, please follow these steps. This is for your own good.
1. Find someone who does piercing as a profession. You can most likely find them at tattoo parlors as they also offer exotic piercing. If you still cannot find one, try looking for them in the phone book, internet, or just go around town and hope that you can find one. But it still holds best to ask for recommendations from people who had their tongue pierced also.
2. If you have already found the institution that does body piercing, check the credentials of that institution. Check if they are really credible enough. Remember, this institution will be cutting you, piercing you and if you are a bit lenient about this, you can have a risk of getting diseases such as HIV or HPV. Research about the said institution and ask around.
3. The price should be the last thing to consider when getting your tongue pierced. Always have the venue be the priority. Remember, your tongue is very important so give it the best one that you can afford. Normally, tongue piercing can go as much as 30-50 dollars. So, be ready and to be able to get a fair deal, go for a place that is neat, clean and piercing that you like and trust. Also, put to mind that they should autoclave their equipment.
4. If they do not offer to show their autoclave records, ask. At this point, it is not really rude to ask and it is also your right to know those records as you will be the one who is going to use the said equipment. So, it is better be safe and sure. However, a good institution or place would be happy to show and prove to you have sanitary they are.
5. Book an appointment to the place you have chosen.
6. Always ask to see the portfolio, they will be proud to show you their work and would be very happy to show it to you.
7. Prior to your appointment to your piercer, eat lost of long-lasting foods such as pasta and oatmeal. Most likely, you won't be able to handle solid foods for a while and most professionals would recommend you to eat solid foods after two days since piercing. Also, do not forget to bring ice chips as you need to suck on these after the piercing is done. This is because the ice chips can help reduce the swelling. Please take not also that on the first day, sipping a straw may hurt and your tongue can swell to twice the normal size.
8. After the swelling has gone down (that is about 2-3 weeks), return to your piercer to have your barbell refitted for a smaller size. Since at this time your swelling has gone down, you can very well likely eat and the long bar is not advised already since this bar can damage your teeth and can also break your molar teeth.
