Google are one of the biggest companies and brands in the world, they are a billion dollar business and all this has been achieved by word of mouth and providing the best possible technology in any one of their applications. Google has always resisted advertising traditionally, they have allowed their products to spread virally across the world and it has worked up until now.
Google's launch of their new browser Chrome has not had he attention that it deserves and still only takes up 1% of the market. So Google have created a 30 second TV clip which uses stop-motion animation and is based on the classic videogame Breakout, in which a ball is bounced off a paddle to smash through a wall of bricks. It promotes the clean lines of code that the browser has.
So why do Google need to actually advertise themselves on TV? I personally believe it is because Microsoft and their Internet Explorer browser have such a great hold on the browser market at the moment and no normal non technical web user are going to even know how to change their browser or what a browser actually is, too them it is just something that they type a URL in. Almost everyone in the world has grown up with a Microsoft operating system on their computers; therefore the browser that they have always used is Internet Explorer.
Although there is the great Firefox, that hasn't really been promoted main stream so the only people that use it are the tech savvy minds. People do not know any different, Internet Explorer does the job for them so why should they change? This is exactly what Google need to get across to the public and show them that using the Chrome browser is the new and trendy way to surf the internet. We all saw how IPhone have promoted their product and how much it has caught on, Google should take exactly the same approach, there are limited ways that they can promote their browser online because although it will be highly targeted, normal regular people will not be searching or looking for something like that, because most people do not know it exists. They are going to have to grab people when they are most relaxed in their homes watching TV.
I am certain that this can in fact help them launch their browser, and make people aware that the default browser they use on their system is not the only one that is available and there are faster, more secure and efficient alternatives.
