Believe it or not, discarded cigarette butts are an absolute epidemic of mass litter. They are polluting are rivers, streams, oceans, and land all over the world, not only in the United States. It seems that people who smoke cigarettes just light them,smoke them, and throw it down where ever it lands. This may sound a little strange that a cigarette butt being thrown down on the ground could be a such a factor in pollution, after all it is just one cigarette butt. Just one cigarette butt multiplied by 365 days a year, multiplied approximately a half a billion times a day that is, this is what is being thrown down on the soil of our land and in our waterways.
The majority of people that do smoke, participate in this everyday; they end up throwing a cigarette butt on the ground somewhere, sometime during the day. A smoker is going to smoke and when there is not an ashtray somewhere outside where they are smoking at, then the butt ends up on the ground. These numbers are hard to image when you think about it. Cigarette makers across the world produce these cigarettes each day to keep up with the demand. If people want to smoke, that is there business, but when they pollute the rest of the world everyone else lives in too, it makes it the business of non-smokers too.
People today seem to forget that even something as little as this could be so harmful to the earth.
A used cigarette butt contains chemicals that are put into the tobacco when it is manufactured. It would take a math expert to figure out what kind of space that is actually taken up by just the cigarette butts smoked in a week. Once again, believe it or not, the space that is taken up by cigarette butts would fill a football stadium in just one week. And even though this is tons of cigarette butts, the amount of chemicals that is put out from them is also amazing.
Pollution in the United States is already at an all time high for the amount of waste that is produced
by people on a daily basis. The water that is being drank has high levels of all sorts of chemicals.
Just one thing that smokers can do to clean up their act would be to look at it like the military do everyday. They simply field strip their cigarette butts and through them away in a garbage can. It is that easy smokers, so be smart and use a trash can and put your butt where it belongs.
