It is important that you know what you are doing and why you are doing them when creating information products.
First, creating one product will not make you wealthy. Depending upon how much money you want or how much status you want, you will need to create many products, such as a new product every month.
Keep in mind that not all products are written. Some products are recordings of teleseminars you already gave or a 2-page tip sheet, or even a 1-page fact sheet, a video or a resource list.
You also need to know if your product will sell. One of the most common mistakes people make is creating a product which focuses on a particular topic because they believe people should know this information. You may think like that but the market does not have that same need. They are not interested in purchasing your product.
Instead of spending all that time, effort and money to produce a product that does not sell, test your market. You may want to introduce a down sized version of the product and see if there is interest. For example, rather than write a 150-page eBook, write a few articles, or produce a couple of 30-minute audios and see if people are interested. You can use that smaller product as a bonus to the people who sign up to your major information product.
Before beginning think about the pros and cons of creating your product make sure you understand the ups and downs of creating the product. For example, it is going to take you time to create the product and there is no guarantee that it will sell even though you tested the market. You also need to market you information product and not just when you created it but as long as you are planning to sell it. You also should be thinking about what the competition is doing with this topic. Is there competition? What are they doing with the topic: blogging, creating information products, teaching classes?
On the other hand, a good information product will give you passive income, increase your visibility and credibility, open doors for you that would not otherwise open, help you create a celebrity status, and provide you with free PR.
Chances are very good that there is much written about long term health insurance. There is also much written about estate planning, how to improve your distance in golf, and how to lose weight. The question for you, then, is why would someone want to purchase your information about long term health insurance, or losing weight, or improving your distance in golf?
To find the answer you first need to know what exactly are the issues and the problems. What is keeping your target market up at night? In other words, what would motivate them to purchase your information product?
Depending upon your topic, you may find the answer by browsing through a magazine rack at a local book store and find out what the latest trends are by reading the table of contents. When you see the same topic repeated in several magazines you know you have hit upon a problem that magazines are trying to solve.
You could do the same type of browsing with the book titles.
If you have a list of subscribers to your blog or newsletter you may want to take a survey or send out an email and ask them what are their 3 top issues that need solving.
You could ask the same question in your social networking media such as tweeting the question or asking it in your Facebook group or Linked in community.
Then think about what sets you apart from the crowd. It may be that your father used the long term health insurance you are promoting and you can tell the story of how effective it was for him in different circumstances. Perhaps you once worked for the government at an insurance regulatory agency and you have a background in insurance that cannot be matched. Or you and your daughter a total of 180 pounds two years ago and have not gained a pound since then. That is another personal experience that will stand out in any crowd.
The point is what do you know in your experiences and areas of expertise that you can solve the problems of your target market? Then describe what you do to solve those problems. It may be you have a special technique or lengthy personal experience. Organize your solution in an outline form, put it aside, and start planning for development and marketing.
My advice is before you take the time to create your information product is to decide if your products are designed to produce revenues or be used to market other things such as events or other higher ticket items. In either case, establish a business plan for the information product first. It will make the writing run very smoothly.
