No one can avoid the deceitful nature of the humankind. Anyone has tendency to lie and anyone can fall for it. It happens in school, at work, with your family and friends, in public places, and just about anywhere.
According to a study from University of Massachusetts, people tell an average of two to three lies during a 10-minute conversation. And 60% of them told at least one lie.
Sadly, everyone is vulnerable to lies. It's part of our daily life. People tell lies for a number of reasons such as trying to hide things, want to take advantage of the situation, or wanting to look better and get someone's attention.
In dating, there are a lot of ehem-believe-me-I'm-this-good antics going on to impress your date. Especially if you are still at getting-to-know you stage, anyone wants to step their best foot forward for their personal gain.
You need to become a good lie detector yourself for your own sake. If you are suspecting the person you are dating lying to you, be wary of the next words that will come out of his mouth and make sure you read his body movements very carefully because the lies will eventually surface if you pay attention.
Here are some of the things you have to watch out for.
The eyes are the window to your soul, and it shows in most cases. Some experts say that people who lie often have excessive eye movements. Their eyes blink faster and more frequent, they look at different directions, and they sometimes don't look you directly in the eye. But there are also times when good liars do it the other way around. They look at you more often and at lesser blink rate. These type of people are hard to catch so be extra sensitive.
They swear in all honesty. They say words like frankly, honestly, or truthfully behind their lies. This way, it would be easier to engage the other person to believe in what you are saying, but it hardly ever work though.
Most people get a little nervous when they lie, they make hand movements, they are uncomfortable, and voice trembles in random occasions. But there are also liars, and again the good liars, who remain composed, confident, and casual as if it is the truest thing they can say.
The killer smile. Lying is a game of deceiving. The more you act genuine feelings the better chances you can make the other person believe you. Smile plays a big role in this. If a person already lied to you, be cautious of his smiles. They can stab you when you put down your guards. True smiles are big and bright that you will notice a crinkle forming around the eyes. These genuine facial expressions only last in less than 5 seconds, according to research.
Sticking to details. The most important part of conversation is cohesion of thoughts. Practiced liars are good in jumbling up words. They will stick to facts of the story and then elegantly insert falsehoods every now and then. Even though you have confirmed some parts are true, don't be fooled into believing that the entire story is true.
