Anything that attracts millions of visitors must be something that people can make money from. That said, when Youtube started growing in popularity, no one was sure how it would become profitable. With its individual user accounts and comments system, Youtube was one of the first sites to demonstrate social networking characteristics. Before this we got Myspace (2003), and later on we got Facebook in 2004. But how has the marketing agency utilised these ultra popular sites?
With 200 million users worldwide, Facebook is of particular interest to the marketing agency elite. It is, quite simply, the next big thing. The particular innovation of Facebook is to be able to target its adverts to specific people who have recently been in contact with friends about a situation or desire - which could be potentially solved by a given advertiser.
It also provides some information about individuals who click on certain advert, so an advertiser can see if its adverts are hitting the correct market.
In a similar way, Google Adwords adverts appear depending on what a user types into the search engine. In terms of generating revenue for the marketing agency people and the businesses they work for, Google Adwords continues to lead the pack. This system can be fully monitored by whichever marketing agency is involved to see how effective a current campaign is, and so can be adjusted if required.
Youtube also offers a range of advertising options to the marketing agency or the individual business such as full flash banners or Google Adwords style listings. These pop up in relation to whatever a user types into the Youtube search interface. So for example, if someone types in 'holiday fun' it is very likely that a full colour flash banner advertising a holiday company will pop up, along with a list of related text adverts. Youtube is owned by Google, so a comparable approach is used as regards advertising.
When someone decides to buy something, it is generally agreed that (and proved that) Google is king of the pile. If someone wants to buy something they go for Google. If they want to watch videos they go to Youtube - if they want to write witty comments to their friends, they go to Facebook. People who buy things via Facebook or Youtube are people who get distracted by the colourful adverts. It is certainly a profitable advertising method for marketing agency personnel and the businesses they serve, but Google adwords, at least at the moment, is one of the most effective methods of internet marketing.
