Most places of work tend to have a fully trained and qualified individual or persons, holding a legitimate certificate in Health and Safety protocols. With Health and Safety training comes various branches of the course, including COSHH (Control of substances hazardous to health) and NEBOSH (National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health) vocational certificate. These are essential for management and staff of a higher position in the company.
NEBOSH is a course that also entails in-depth knowledge of environmental issues as well as health and safety, and fire risk management. This is by far the most important training needed for managers due to the legal requirements needed in running a successful business. NEBOSH was formed in 1979 which was at the time created as an independent examining body with a charitable status. Over the years this has become globally recognised making it one of the most important training courses for businesses.
The nebosh course itself focuses on the practical and theoretical modules of Health and Safety. Assessment is based on attendance, participation and examination. A typical number of attendees equate to approximately 30,000 candidates each year, with nearly 400 course providers in over 80 countries, making it the most recognisable Health and Safety course. Those who take the course in a foreign country will also be qualified in another country as long as the award body is recognised and legitimate. The training is useful for people working within the public and sector, and for those who have already taken the basic Health and Safety training.
The course itself can be offered via e-learning, part-time over a period of ten or eleven weeks, distance learning (at your own pace over a period of 6 - 12 months) or through face-to-face studying at an actual institute in one go over a period of ten weeks or more. Those participating in the full-time course will need to attend every session and complete assignments with the support of their tutor. The exams are usually practical assessments and theoretical based, to which the candidates are required to have memorised and revised each module.
Typical modules studied on the nebosh training are management of Health and Safety, and controlling work place hazards. These are the two main subjects to focus on with each of them containing their own list of modules that include risk management, principles of control, policy, work equipment, movement of people and vehicles, construction activities and more.
