It's not just a PR exercise anymore. It isn't simply a way to secure the 'green purchase'. These days, virtually all companies have had to become aware of their carbon footprint and have had to consider carbon solutions. Even in so called 'soft economies' which focus on information technology, there is a growing realisation that some of these companies make a large contribution to the CO2 emitted by data storage facilities.
Carbon solutions are ways to reduce the many, many ways in which we contribute to co2 emissions through our home and work life. Naturally, the processes of going to work and actually conducting industrial activity are the main focuses of those seeking out carbon solutions.
It is thought by many who are involved with reducing carbon footprints that businesses need to monitor their carbon emissions on an ongoing basis, and thus require some sort of well organised auditing process. This is known in some circles as 'carbon accounting'. It is important to establish the 'baseline' of a business's emissions, so that an organisation can identify ways to improve it and monitor progress as time goes on.
As a society which is heavily focused on the individual, personal financial and material gain tend to be at odds with many suggested carbon solutions. The idea of sharing a car on the way to work, for many people, is a non starter. It is true, of course, that people are often heading in different directions and so sharing a car is not a viable solution. However, many people are headed in the same direction and if some way were found for a majority of people to share lifts, traffic would be drastically reduced - surely one of the more obvious carbon solutions. One look along a congested high street and we notice that the vast majority of cars have only the driver in them. This paradoxical situation, which creates huge back logs of traffic, is difficult to solve, some say, with such an individualistic approach to life.
A healthy economy though, it seems, relies upon the constant need for people to update their belongings. So our day to day wealth requires factories to be working round the clock to keep our shops filled with goods to buy on our days off. These factories are in the main based abroad, but the demand that creates their waste largely comes from western nations.
For those organisations that cannot avoid producing significant amounts of CO2, carbon offsetting plans are obvious carbon solutions. This might include a company making a contribution roughly equal to their emissions - in terms of investing in renewable energy such as wind farms, solar farms, hydroelectric power and bio fuel. As recent moves made by governments across the globe show, these carbon solutions are crucial to improving the planet's outlook - and indeed many customers expect these solutions to be offered. This is especially true of companies like airlines which have a high profile carbon footprint.
Whatever the size of organisation, seeking out carbon solutions to reduce negative effects on the environment is something that every company and organisation will need to do - now, or in the very near future.
