Wolfram Alpha has been a much anticipated knowledge search engine, there has been a huge media buzz surrounding the engine itself and it has been hailed as the new way in which people will search for results. Some people are even calling it the resource or search engine that may destroy Google.
But I personally feel that this is quite an absurd argument as both of the engines do completely different things. Google on one hand gives you actual results of third part sites, they ranks sites according to their algo. Wolfram Alpha does something totally different and gives you actual answers to questions. For example if you type in a complex mathematical equation then Wolfram should be able to deliver the answer to you.
As a matter of fact both of these engines could actually help each other, on one side of the argument Google will be able to deliver some of the trusted results from Wolfram Alpha in their index just like they do with Wikipedia, we all know that people use highly on topic anchor text to link to wiki pages and that's why they rank so high, and the same can be said for Wolfram Alpha, it is going to get a lot of Google based traffic. The benefit that Google will get from all of this is that they will be able to deliver highly targeted mathematical results to their searchers.
I think there is plenty of room for both search engines to coexist with each other and help each other, each do their own individual task brilliantly. I mean there is no way that people are going to go on Wolfram Alpha to search for things such as where to buy computer games or booking a holiday, as that is not what it was meant for.
All this being said though I do feel that Wolfram Alpha could steel some of Wikipedia's thunder, if you are currently looking to find out information about something then you are likely to land on a wiki page, but within the next few months we could actually see some of them visitors instead finding themselves located outside the Wolfram Alpha site. The site itself will be the resource that most schools will come to rely on as it will not only help educate the pupils, but it will be a much better way to understand and hopefully learn from and about things.
