Many people who are new to shipping goods have no idea what does or does not come with the services offered by their San Francisco courier services. They have lots of questions, and even with the best courier companies who do their best to answer everything that might come to mind, it is almost a sure thing that something will be forgotten, and that the client will still have more questions. One of these that is almost forgotten every time, right up until the last minute, is, 'Will my courier provide any packaging materials for me?'
Obviously, depending on whether you're shipping a small package that would fit in a box or a large truckload of freight all the way across the country, you are still going to have a need for a variety of packing materials, even though they might differ greatly between those two types of shipments. The easiest way to answer this question is to say categorically that there is no solid answer, and the policy on this is going to differ between every single delivery company out there. The only way to know one hundred percent is to call your company up as soon as you think of the question and find out directly what they can or cannot provide for you in the realm of packing materials.
If all you are shipping is small packages and parcels across town, there is a high likelihood that your courier company isn't going to stock packing supplies on a regular basis. The shipping standards for small packages are of course plain manila envelopes and unmarked brown packages, and most companies don't bother stocking these things on a regular basis. However, if you're unsure of where to purchase these items, they will likely be able to steer you in the right direction. A larger company that deals in larger items might have packing materials that they can sell to you as part of the cost of your shipment. Every company is different as to what they carry but they might have boxes, pallets, tape, string, bubble wrap or Styrofoam kernels available to you, and the only way you can know for sure is to ask.
Some larger trucking companies might request that you use their standardized pallets in order to ensure that their truckloads fit properly. This would obviously be a case where they do provide some supplies, so you should be sure to inquire about their requirements.
