If you live in the country do you have a pit in your yard that you burn things in? These pits used to be all over the place, but with all of the dry weather and new burning laws these days they have become few and far between. You used to burn everything that was used each day in the country, but now most of these items are not allowed to be burned. Some people that live out in the country still burn everything and on some days you can smell it when you drive by. Another reason why this happened is this smoke causes a lot of damages.
There used to be garbage dumps everywhere that the local trash was taken to and it was often burned there. The smoke from these pits traveled and in some cases it can travel for miles. Some places still burn old oil and old car parts and tires even if they know they should recycle the stuff instead. These items do a lot of damage to all things that are close to them. This is because the smoke from these pits are really heavy black smoke. This smoke will settle on your things leaving pits and residue on whatever it lands on. This smoke is really toxic to breathe also. If you happen to be too close to these pits make sure that you are wearing a mask and do not stay too long.
Burning things like tires and other hazardous materials is banned in most places. You are always encouraged to take anything like tires, oil, or any thing that can be recycled to the proper place. If you do not know where to take your old stuff, then you might contact your local department of sanitation, if you have one, and find out where and how to dispose of these things.
While there are not that many places left where you are actually allowed to burn your garbage, people do still manage to get away with burning their yard debris like tree limbs and leaves. Even this is unnecessary burning because all of these natural elements make terrific mulch for your yard or compost for a vegetable garden and flower beds. You can even throw in the scraps left over from your meals. It will make rich nutritious compost that will be free of charge. We all must do what we can to cut down on the amount of air pollution we have and the last thing any of us need to do is add to it when there is a better choice available than burning.
