Can I Estimate the Weight of My Shipment when Scheduling a Pickup?

When you use a Florida courier for any element of your business, one of the things that you are going to be asked to do quite frequently is to tell them the weight of your shipments. Now, businesses might be using a courier for a wide variety of different purposes. Obviously, for someone who is using a small car courier to move legal documents around a single city, weight constraints are not going to be that much of a concern. The same goes for anyone shipping packages that are small and individual, where a simple weight estimate might be just fine. However, when shipping larger goods, especially when shipping actual freight with a trucking division of a courier company, it can become much more important to have an accurate representation of the weight of your shipment.

The courier companies will always ask you how much your shipment weighs, and often people will reply by asking if it is okay if they simply estimate the weight of the package. This is okay in the cases of small parcels and such, but it is very easy to get into trouble when estimating the weight of a larger shipment. If you have shipped the exact same items many time in the past, you might be able to make an accurate weight estimate that would reduce the likelihood of any problems, however, a wrong guess on the weight might end up costing you money. The company is going to weight your shipment, and if there is a discrepancy between the weights you estimated and the actual weight, your bill will have the difference added to it. In addition, this can raise your costs even further if the weight is off far enough that it requires the use of a different type of vehicle or trailer than what was originally assigned to your shipment based on your initial estimate.

The consequences that occur if there is a mistake will depend on your standing with the courier company. Generally, if you have an account with the company they will simply contact you and let you know that the difference has been added to you bill. If you do not have an account though, your shipment will often be frozen until you have paid the difference. After paying it, it will of course be released and be free to continue to its destination, but this can create a delay for your customers.
