You hear people encouraging others to recycle their garbage all of the time and many times those people are just interpreted as environmental nuts. Who has time to pick through their trash everyday and keep all of those separate containers to put it in? Well, at some point the rest of us must wake up and realize that if we want to leave any kind of world behind that is fit to live in for our children and grandchildren, we have to start listening to the crazy environmentalists.
The key to saving this planet from becoming inundated with garbage, and the air, water, and land being so polluted it is unfit for human habitation any longer, starts with any small step you can take. If you have a home or yard that is large enough to store your recyclable items for a period of time, then do it. If you live somewhere that has regular pickup of recyclable items, use that service. Recycling things like plastics, motor oils, and disposing of chemicals that are harmful to the environment in the right way are just a few things that will help, but recycling is what you do with the remainder of a finished product, conserving things and reusing things is just as big a part of saving our planet because you are using less things to be recycled in the first place.
Plastics are one of the biggest problems in landfills because it takes so very long for them to break down. Just by reusing one plastic water bottle over and over again, you can save hundreds of plastic bottles from having to be produced at all in about a year. Just by taking reusable cloth bags with you to the grocery store each time you go can save a great number of the paper or plastic ones your local grocery store must provide for you at the checkout counter. This is not recycling, but reusing and it is just as effective.
There are still so many people in our country that do not realize that we Americans produce so much more garbage every year than other countries. And it is not just garbage. We use more oil, more electricity, and more water as well. We allow the foods we buy to be over packaged unnecessarily and we will not even complain about it to the manufacturers even though it can take a jack hammer to open a simple package. Have you bought a toy for a child lately?
By the time you get it out of the package, they will not even want to play with it anymore or they have already outgrown it. It is up to us to make a difference and it does not matter what method you choose, just change somethings you do that will have an impact on waste and conservation. It all adds up no matter how small or often your contribution is.
