Methods to Reduce Levels of Cholesterol

To reduce the level of cholesterol is necessary because its high levels in the bloodstream increase the danger of coronary heart disease. In case the cholesterol level in your bloodstream is abnormally high, follow the below mentioned guidelines to reduce it.

Step 1: Cut down on your fat and cholesterol consumption
The first step that you need to take in order to bring down your cholesterol levels is to reduce your intake of fat and cholesterol. You need to make healthier food choices. For instance, opt for olive oil and canola oil that are monosaturated instead of saturated fats such as butter.

Discontinue the intake of eggs, polyunsaturated oils, butter, margarine and other varieties of greasy dressings, as they're high in cholesterol. In pace of these, increase the intake of entire cereals and fibre rich items, such as fresh veggies and fruits.

Step 2: Alter Your Lifestyle
You should not behave like a couch-potato. Also, give up junk food. Such a lifestyle increases the chances of boosting cholesterol levels in your bloodstream manifold. You need to eat food items with high nutrient and fibre content. Likewise , you should also exercise frequently. You may either play field games, or do activities like walking, running and cycling. Physical activities increase the body metabolism and help you digest the food quickly.

Step 3: Switch to cholesterol lowering medication if lifestyle changes do not help
If lifestyle changes do not help you lower cholesterol or the level of LDL or triglycerides in your blood stream is too high, you need to look for cholesterol lowering medications. Cholesterol lowering medications can be split into various categories depending upon which component of cholesterol you wish to work on - Cholesterol, LDL cholesterol or Triglycerides.

In order to lower LDL cholesterol medicines like Statins and Vitamin B ( niacin ) can be consumed. A note of caution though! Don't over-consume Vitamin B. It may lead to some major side-effects. Follow the doctor's instructions on its consumption pattern. Similarly, take care while taking other cholesterol-lowering medications. They too might have some side-effects.
