The Advantages of a Motorized Satellite System

Satellites for many of us is the source to receive analogue, digital and HDTV. There are subscriptions and viewing cards for packages from all around the globe, you possibly have one as well and are catching the channels with a dish. Most likely you have a small dish but that's often all that's needed to watch the channels from your country because the beam is strongest near its targeted location. The interesting thing is that if you tried turning the dish you would be able to view channels from another satellite, like from a different country. The sky is full of satellites and Free to Air which very possibly don't require a big dish. The most viewed satellites in Europe are Hotbird and Astra which carries many FTA channels in different languages, such as Turkish, Italian and Russian. It perhaps does not sound interesting to view the foreign channels. Now lets say you would die to watch a sports event not broadcasted on your channels but the match is on a free on another satellite, wouldn't it be great to watch it? Some channels also have English audio channels. Its not that much enjoyment of having to go out and manually move the satellite dish each time between satellites. This is where motors come into the picture. There are different types, such as DiSEqC, 36v Horizon to Horizon and actuators. DiSEqC are the most installed and they work pretty good for dishes up to 1 meter in size. With this kind of motor it uses your satellite receiver as power that runs on 12v and 17v. The receivers have limited power for the motor as it has to share it with the LNB, this means they are slow and not as strong as H to H motors. Its a convenient upgrade as it uses the existing coax cable which already connects to the LNB on your dish. 36v actuators and H to H motors are better, can handle higher wind loads and move larger dishes and these use their own dedicated power from the receivers built-in 36v positioner. Still a lot of digital receivers don't have a positioner built-in but in this case you could use a device like the VBox. The advantage of the V-Box is the satellite positions are stored inside it instead of into the receivers software. All the motors are designed do the same thing, tracking the satellite arc within 180 degrees. Its not possible to go further as all the other satellites would be below the horizon, as in not visible. Its a good thing to plan where to put the dish so trees and other objects are not obstructing view to the satellites you want to catch. If all is aligned correctly the dish will turn to the satellites location as you switch channel. This will open up to a whole new dimension of viewing as you can catch channels from all over the world. Only limit is now the dish size. On Lyngsat you can find out which dish diameter is recommended from your location for any desired satellite. So the bigger dish you have, the more channels you would be able to scan in.

On satellites there are also different types of bands, these are operating in their own frequencies. C-Band is low frequency and generally needs huge dishes. Ku-Band which is used throughout Europe, operates in the higher range of frequencies. Both of these bands have Vertical and Horizontal (Linear), Left and Right (Circular) polarization. LNB's are either Circular or Linear, you can still have two on same dish if you put the two LNB's next to each other. When you do this you can use a 2/1 DiSEqC switch, this will automatically inform the receiver which LNB to use for each type of signal. There are many combination's of dishes, motors and LNB's but don't give up its not as confusing as you might think. The horizon is containing loads of satellites and channels that anyone can see with the equipment currently available on the market.
