Case modding is the process of modifying a computer case. Our computer cases don't need to be seen as Grey, pale looking boxes which hides under the desk. The first case mods started out with people that overclocked their computers, as this would create extra heat and a way to cool the hardware was to cut holes in the case and mount fans on the side panels. The creativity expanded as users began to add plexiglass in the side panels to highlight a view from inside of the case. It became popular to use cold cathodes in different colors as lighting from inside the case.
The imagination and creativity of case modding grew dramatically as users found other ways to give their cases a personalized look. People began painting their cases, replacing the dim LED's with super bright LED's, the bright blue ones are often the choice among case modders even today. This also led to customized cases, such as modded household objects with computers inside and homemade wooden cases. The creativity had no limits and it was easy to find guides on how to the different mods. The growing community on the net all shared their ideas and modifications. There was even held competitions where one could win modded cases. Case mod products became accessible in stores where one could buy products such as bright LED's, glowing power supplies, colored cables, fans with built-in LED's, anodized heat sinks in different colors and many other items. The manufactures of hardware such as graphic cards, motherboards and sound cards followed with this growing trend. We began to see the PCB's in different colors which the modders could choose between and match a users case mod theme. Having blue lighting through the plexiglass together with a blue motherboard could give a nice look. We also could mount devices on the cases DVD/CD drive panel which would show the temperature of the different hardware, like the CPU, graphic card and memory, some even included potentiometers to adjust the speed of the cooling fans.
Today the popularity of case modding is not as great as the early years. Today's cases are to some degree premodded, come in various colors and generally have a more pleasing look compared to the old Grey cases. Premodded cases has now become more of a business industry where some users rather buy a modded case than creating own mods. These often have mods like plexiglass side panels with inside lighting and bright LED's. Case modding can be lots of work but will always be a way to highlight a user's creativity in an artistic way.
