Designing Ponds and Water Features

Don’t you think that a family garden looks incomplete without a water lily or a fish pond? Any water feature, let it be a pond or even a simple fountain, renders a joy to behold. It adds a serene natural beauty to your property. A pond in your garden elegantly personalizes your outdoor living area. It not only adds value to your day to day living but also hikes the value of your property. If you have a garden, you must have a water feature in it! But as every important enterprise you undertake, it has to be planned. Unplanned construction projects are quite prone to become expensive mistakes involving unnecessary expenditures and stress. It would be better to avoid it.

You can take up this job by yourself keeping in mind there are many tasks to manage. The biggest challenge is to select a suitable space for the pond. Make sure, the location you have selected, gets adequate sunlight. It is so because all the water plants and vegetations that you would like to surround your pond, require lots of sunlight. It is better to keep the pond away from the vicinity of the trees, especially if the trees are deciduous. It will help maintaining the cleanliness of the water body which spares you time in the future. The water supply to the pond should be accessible as you will have to top up the pond regularly in the summer season. Last, but the most important of all when designing your pond -keep in mind safety of children. If you have children you cannot stop them from going near the water. And if you haven’t got kids yet, probably your friends, neighbours or other family members would like to visit you bringing their brood there. So don’t try to avoid this issue saying it is none of your concerns.

Try to keep it a little away from the house boundary so as to give the pond a more natural look. It will be good if some part of your pond is visible from the inside of your house as well. After all, you have spent your hard earned money on it and you deserve to enjoy its view from anywhere you like.

The next step is to choose the shape of your pond. Use a rope or a hose to visualize the shape of the pond. The pond should be at least 32 sq feet in size. The bigger the size is the steadier is its balance. It is advisable to keep the designs simple. Simple shapes facilitate easy water circulation within the pond.

Last but not least; decide upon the vegetation you want around your pond. Before settling down for any plants, keep in mind the fact that every plant flourishes and dies. You should also make up your mind to deal with situations like parasite attacks or population explosion of toads and frogs. All the situations are manageable. They just require a little patience of yours! And sometimes a piece of advice from professionals may be very helpful.
