Before you Buy Discus Fish - 6 Important factors to consider
A Discus fish is probably the most incredible fish you may ever own. If you have got any interest in discus, I'm sure you understand how expensive these fish can be. Before you make your next purchase use these 6 tips. With these secrets you can make an informed decision when purchasing your new fish.
Before you Buy Discus Fish - Health
A Discus that's in good health should look healthy. Staying on top of the surface, bloated gills, breathing out of on side are obvious signs of an unhealthy fish. Look for DNS labels on the side of the aquarium. This means at one point something was sick and the fish store would not sell the fish. These are warning signs of sick fish. Make certain to ask the fish owner about these tanks now and then they use this term for quarantine reasons as well..
Before you Buy Discus Fish - Second Tip - Alert and Response
In this next tip I want to teach you how to test how alert and responsive the discus is. See how the fish will respond to food. If the fish is not going to eat their is generally a problem. Taking an interest in the food but will not eat is a bad sign. If your dealer is not going to feed the fish because “sir I just feed them” Tell him good bye and find a new store
Before you Buy Discus Fish - Third Tip - Buy an Adult
To keep your new hobby hassle free. Just get juveniles or adult fish while your still getting your feet wet with discus. Discus adults have a better tolerance to water condition changes, while babies have to be watched more carefully
Before you Buy Discus Fish - Fourth Tip - Dealer Quarantine Period
Dealers use a quarantine time. The time period from when the vendor or shop keeper obtained the fish to time they decide to sell the fish is the quarantine period Ask the supplier how long they determined to quarantine the fish for. It can take as much as 2 weeks for fish to indicate a disease. This is about the rate of time they should be quarantined for. Make sure the dealer knows if the fish have been subjected to any medicines or if they've been de-wormed. In order to get a good back round and some history relating to the fish these questions are the ones to ask.
Before you Buy Discus Fish - Fifth Tip - Health Beyond the Surface Of the Fish
Healthy discus pass a lot of waste. It is wise to check the bottom of the aquarium and see if there is waste you can actually see. The waste which they pass needs to be black. Keep an eye out for white looking feces this tends to point out an internal problem along the lines of intestinal worms These are significant factors to look for and it might be recommended to find a new store to buy your fish at if you can't get a reasonable explanation from your vendor.
Sixth Tip - Water Chemistry
Aquarium chemistry is important whenever you purchase discus fish. Ask the breeder or fish owner what the present water conditions are of the fish you are going to buy. Something should be done to your tank if the breeder is respectable and their tank conditions are different than yours. If you're thinking that the shop vendor has odd water conditions walk away because clearly they don’t know what they're doing. Ask the discus keeper how they would suggest that you acclimate your new discus. Water circumstances will very slightly so this is an important question to ask.
These factors will help you the next time you decide to purchase discus fish thus have them at heart the next time your at a fish store. This will prevent from inadvertently buying an unhealthy fish which will die in a couple of weeks.
