Five Myths About Root Canals

By : Howard Bauer    29 or more times read

Most people are horrified to hear their dentist say that you need a root canal. People are under the wrong impression that they are in for a lot of pain. This is simply not true. I will talk about five of these reasons, and why a root canal should not scare you.
Myth Number 1.
My tooth does not hurt at the moment, so why do I need to have a root canal now?
There are times when you can feel no pain and will still need a root canal. A root canal is needed when an infection, such as a cavity has progressed to the point where it has gone through the enamel of the tooth and reached the center or pulp of the tooth. If this has happened then a root canal will be necessary. If you leave this unchecked then the infection can move into the bone, then you have a much bigger problem. Also a much more expensive problem.
Myth Number 2.
Doctor, I am a big baby and I know this is going to hurt! I knew a guy once that was six foot and four inches, weighed in at 250 pounds, and passed out if he even thought something would hurt. Well this big baby and many others can relax. Technology is a wonderful thing. With modern technology and procedures your root canal will hurt no more than having a cavity filled.
Myth Number 3.
I cant have a root canal because I am pregnant! Sorry ladies, you cant get out of it that easy. The radiation used in today's x-rays is very small. Also the doctor or hygienist will cover your abdomen with a lead apron. You will be pleased to hear that the pain killers are safe for your baby. Just make sure you let your doctor know that you are pregnant.
Myth Number 4.
I would rather have my tooth pulled than have a root canal! Probably not the best move, it is much more expensive to have an implant or a bridge than a root canal. Besides don't forget you need your teeth for chewing and eating. This can be very uncomfortable missing a tooth.
Myth Number 5.
Even if I have it done, it will have to come out sooner or later. This is not true, if you maintain good oral hygiene and see your dentist regularly, then your root canal will last the rest of your life. So as you can see dental procedures have come a long way. However there is no substitute for good oral hygiene and regular visits to your dentist. Proper oral care can prevent root canals and many other problems form occuring in the first place.
